-Afterwards-

Threw your clothes haphazardly in a suitcase
Packed the papers and trinkets and everything
Emptied out the drawers and the spaces in my heart
And all you left behind was just a ring

It never really fit your finger anyways
I should have known when you put it on
A too-big ring, a too-small life, and words too hard to say
And a too-demanding love that's already gone

But how is it that I'm still sitting here
Beside the place you always came to cry
'Cause I always knew about the things that broke your heart
So I always knew we'd have to say goodbye

It really wasn't that I didn't care
But love is something we just couldn't do
And we were both liars back then, don't you know
'Cause you could never say I love you too

So even when I knew you sat here alone
I thought if I held you then, I'd break apart
Neither of us knew what it was to be in love
We guessed the ending at the very start

They say that kind of love's not really love
When all you do is hurt and scream
What we had was built with impulse, fear and anger
We'd never admit to having dreams

All you left behind was a ring
And all the things you thought I didn't know
You're the only one who ever meant a single thing to me
The only one I didn't want to go

...Because I really wanted to write about something broken and hurtful.

I didn't really want it to be emo, but more of a helpless sort of thing--they were both so afraid of being hurt that it pushed them apart.

P.S. I left it as "open" because, even if I intended it to rhyme, the rhythm is a bit more free-verse style.

First impressions: the repetition of the version at the end gives this the feel of a song. One that's sung slow, quietly, but with a depth of emotion that comes from even the smallest details. From the ring, to the emptiness, to the resonating memories trying to capture the void of the past.

Eeee, I love your reviews. *sighs again* I love how I can discuss this kind of thing with you and you get it. ^^ Thanks so much for reading it for me. ;)
